Chapter 19 - The Last Recording

The sedan was found abandoned less than a mile away. Inside, investigators recovered a laptop, a set of false identification papers, and a small recorder. The laptop was locked, but the recorder contained a conversation between Lang and Dad.
Lang's voice came first. "The girl called Arthur. The whole protection arrangement is exposed."
Dad answered, "Then make the mother look unstable. Get the records back, and no one can prove anything."
"What about the warehouse?"
"That was years ago. Nobody cares about two workers anymore."
Mom covered her mouth when she heard that. I felt anger so hot it frightened me.
The recording continued. Lang said the ledger had been moved, but he didn't know where the last page was. Dad told him to find it before the hearing.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"If she won't sign," Dad said, "we use Emily. She'll come back if she thinks her mother is going away."
Arthur stopped the recording.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Investigator Brooks took the recorder into evidence. The prosecutor now had a clear link between Dad, Lang, and the attempt to intimidate Mom and me. The financial records also showed that Bellmark had received money from the same accounts used to pay for the false warehouse inspection.
That night, Mom finally cried without trying to hide it. She wasn't crying because she was weak. She was crying because she had carried this fear alone for so long.
I sat beside her until her breathing slowed.
"I should have told you sooner," she whispered.
"You told me what I needed to know to call for help."
Arthur stood in the doorway. "The prosecutor is filing charges in the morning."
Mom looked up.
"Against Daniel?"
"Against Daniel, Lang, and Pike. The case isn't over, but it has changed."

Then Arthur's phone rang again.
The accountant who had agreed to testify had disappeared on his way to the federal building.
