Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT WE BURIED FRANK

“Grant Mercer,” Michael said. “He came with Jessica after the funeral. I was upstairs. I heard them arguing outside your study.”

I stared at him. Frank's funeral had ended before sunset. My boy had brought me a sandwich I couldn't eat, then stayed to wash the dishes. Apparently he'd also brought strangers into a house full of mourning.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Jessica said he was evaluating her business. She wanted to use our house as collateral, and he asked for copies of the loan documents.”

“During your father's funeral?”

“I know.” His voice cracked. “I told her it was a bad time. I should have made him leave.”

“Did he enter the study?”

“I don't know. I found the safe open later. I thought you'd opened it.”

For years I'd believed my family was held together by kindness. Now I could see how silence had done much of the work.

I told Priya what Michael had admitted. She asked him to put every detail in writing, including the times he remembered and the files he'd allowed Jessica to copy. He said he would. When he left, he didn't try to kiss my cheek.

That night I opened Frank's old voicemail folder. Most messages were grocery reminders and his jokes about the weather. The last one, recorded a week before he died, said, “Ellie, Michael's grown. We can love him without saving him from every consequence. That's the hardest part, isn't it?”

I played it twice.

Lois sat with me. “You didn't fail him by trusting him.”

“I might have failed him by always rescuing him.”

She said nothing, which was why I loved her.

Just before midnight, Michael emailed a photograph of the safe's inventory sheet. A line circled in red showed the original loan paperwork removed. Next to it he'd written one sentence: I FOUND THIS IN JESSICA'S OFFICE. GRANT'S HANDWRITING IS ON THE BACK.

And beneath the note was a date—three weeks before Frank's death.
