Chapter 18 - WHAT WAS IN STORAGE

The signature made my skin go cold. I had stopped counting how often someone had tried to make a dead man speak for them.

Priya asked for the document to be preserved. Jessica's attorney reported that she could no longer rely on its authenticity. Soon afterward she withdrew from representing Jessica, leaving the disputed paper in the proper hands for examination.

Over the following weeks, investigators obtained records from Grant's business and the storage company through legal process. Michael turned over his emails. The assistant who had accessed my camera agreed to an interview. He described being paid to deliver the photographs and frighten me into signing.

There was no single confession—just records, mismatched signatures, and witnesses deciding whether to tell the truth.

The storage unit held scanned family documents, old signature samples, party-planning notes, and boxes of office records. Among them was the missing copy of my deed of trust and a folder labeled FAMILY RESPONSE STRATEGY.

I didn't read every ugly page. Priya summarized the part that mattered: Jessica and Grant had discussed manufacturing a public dispute, then using it to pressure me into releasing the loan. The shattered frame had become more than cruelty. It had been part of a calculated plan.

Michael came to my house with the findings. He sat where he had sat as a child, turning an empty coffee mug in his hands.

“I don't know how to live with knowing I let this happen,” he said.

“You start by not letting it happen again.”

He reached for my hand. I let him hold it, but neither of us called that forgiveness.

That evening, the detective called. Investigators had referred the financial evidence to prosecutors for review. The threats, forgery allegations, and false documents would no longer be treated as a private family argument.

Then Priya gave me one final piece of news.

The court had scheduled a hearing to determine what happened to the house—and whether my loan would be paid before the remaining proceeds disappeared.
