Chapter 1 - The Door That Wasn't There

The scream came from the basement before Daniel Mercer had both feet inside the house.
“Dad!”
He dropped the grocery bag. An orange rolled beneath the hall table as he ran.
Emma stood at the bottom of the basement stairs with a pry bar in one hand and dust across her sweatshirt. Behind her, a section of wood paneling hung crooked from the wall.
Daniel stopped.
“What did you do?”
“I didn’t do anything. The shelf moved.”
“There’s concrete behind that wall.”
Emma pointed through the opening. “No, there isn’t.”
The house had belonged to Daniel’s father for thirty-eight years. Daniel had spent half his childhood in that basement. He knew the furnace alcove, the laundry pipes, the cracked foundation block beside the water heater.
There had never been a door.
Yet a narrow steel door stood behind the paneling.
No knob. No hinges visible. Just a key slot and a strip of black tape across the frame.
On the tape, in his father’s block handwriting, were six words:
DANIEL - DO NOT OPEN THIS ALONE.
Emma swallowed. “Grandpa wrote that?”
Daniel touched the letters.
His father had been dead eight months.
“Yes.”
A key hung from a nail behind the panel.
Daniel should have called someone. Rachel. The police. His father’s old friend Martin Hale.
Instead, he put the key in.
The lock opened with a heavy click.
Cold air rolled out.
The hidden room was no larger than a walk-in closet. Metal shelves covered three walls. File boxes. Old photographs. A tape recorder. A gray safe. A yellow legal pad sat on a desk beneath a dead lamp.
Emma stepped beside him.
“Dad.”
Pinned above the desk was a photograph of Daniel at twelve years old.
He was standing beside his mother, Laura.
That should not have been possible.
The date stamped in the corner was six months after her funeral.
Daniel reached for it.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered without speaking.
A man breathed once into the line.
Then said, “You opened the room.”
Daniel’s hand went cold.
“Who is this?”
The voice ignored him.
May you like
“Get Emma out of the house before dark.”
Then the call ended.
