Chapter 11 - The Doctor Who Helped Him Forget

The hidden room contained one medical file with Daniel’s name.
He had missed it because his father filed it under D.M. instead of Mercer.
Inside were records from a neurologist named Dr. Henry Vale.
The dates began the week after the fire.
Sedatives.
Sleep therapy.
“Memory stabilization sessions.”
Rachel read the phrase twice.
“They drugged you.”
Daniel felt sick.
The notes described nightmares, repeated statements about “Mom in the smoke,” and one name Daniel kept saying.
Samuel.
Then the notes changed.
PATIENT NOW ACCEPTS VEHICLE ACCIDENT NARRATIVE.
Emma pushed away from the desk.
“Grandpa did this to you?”
Daniel could not defend his father anymore.
He called Dr. Vale’s old practice. The receptionist said Vale had retired to Wisconsin.
Officer Kim reached him first.
By afternoon, they were sitting in a small interview room at the police station with the eighty-two-year-old doctor on video.
Vale looked ashamed before Daniel asked a question.
“Your father told me you were in danger,” he said.
“So you erased my memory?”
“I treated trauma.”
“You trained me to believe my mother died in a crash.”
Vale looked down.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Samuel Price said if you remembered the office fire, he would know Laura had talked to you.”
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
“Was my father protecting me?”
Vale’s face tightened.
“At first.”
Daniel went still.
“What changed?”
“Robert learned Laura intended to testify against him too.”
The room became silent.
Vale continued.
“Your father had signed several fraudulent environmental certifications. Prison was possible.”
Emma whispered, “So Grandpa kept her locked up to save himself.”
Vale closed his eyes.
“For years, yes.”
Then he added something worse.
“Until Laura escaped.”
Daniel gripped the table.
“When?”
“Six years ago. The night Ashcroft closed.”
“Where did she go?”
May you like
Vale looked directly at him.
“Ask Rachel.”
