Chapter 4 - Rachel's Letter

Daniel called Martin before anyone could stop him.
Straight to voicemail.
“Martin, call me.”
Rachel grabbed his wrist. “Don’t tell him what you found.”
Daniel pulled away. “You don’t get to give me rules now.”
Emma stood near the kitchen doorway, arms folded tight.
“Can both of you stop acting like I’m six?”
Rachel closed her eyes.
Then she reached into her purse and removed a sealed letter.
“I was supposed to give you this if your father died and the room was opened.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You’ve had this for eight months?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because until tonight, I thought the room was still hidden.”
He tore the envelope open.
Rachel’s handwriting filled four pages.
Daniel read standing up.
Three years earlier, his father had called Rachel to the house while Daniel was away on a work trip. He showed her the room and told her Laura had not died in the crash.
She had survived.
Someone had moved her before Daniel reached the hospital.
His father spent years telling Daniel she was dead because he believed the people searching for her would stop searching if everyone else believed it too.
Daniel stopped reading.
“My mother was alive?”
Rachel’s voice broke. “Your father said yes.”
“How long?”
“I don’t know.”
“You never asked?”
“I asked everything. He gave me almost nothing.”
Daniel looked down at the next paragraph.
Rachel had written that Laura discovered financial records tied to a company called Mercer-Hale Development. Fake vendors. Bribes. Property transfers. Payments to county inspectors.
Martin Hale had been Daniel’s father’s partner.
And best friend.
The final line of Rachel’s letter was underlined twice.
Your father believed Martin arranged the crash.
Emma’s phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
“Dad.”
“What?”
She turned the phone toward him.
A text from an unknown number showed a photograph taken through their kitchen window ten minutes earlier.
