Chapter 19 - What Silence Bought

Nathan Hale opened his apartment door and stared at Daniel.

Neither man needed an introduction.

“You look like me,” Nathan said.

Daniel laughed once, because anything else might have become a sob.

“So they told you?”

“Yesterday.”

Nathan had found his adoption file while treating Martin after the shooting. Martin’s blood type triggered a question. A genetic test answered it.

Then Nathan searched archived hospital records and discovered Samuel’s name.

“That’s why I accessed sealed records,” he said. “The hospital suspended me.”

Laura stood behind Daniel.

Nathan saw her and stopped breathing.

“My mother?”

Laura nodded.

He stepped backward and sat down.

For the second time in two days, Laura met a son stolen from her by men who claimed necessity.

Police arrested Eric Price that afternoon for helping his father track Laura and destroy evidence.

The original ledger did the rest.

Federal investigators opened cases involving bribery, fraud, illegal adoption payments, and Robert’s death.

Martin agreed to testify.

He did not ask Daniel for forgiveness.

“I was a coward,” he said. “Fear doesn’t change the paperwork I signed.”

Daniel appreciated that more than another excuse.

Weeks later, prosecutors confirmed Samuel had altered the paramedic report after Robert’s death. Toxicology from preserved samples showed a sedative Robert had not been prescribed.

Samuel had not only threatened him.

He had killed him.

But Robert’s crimes remained real too.

Daniel signed over the Mercer-Hale assets connected to fraudulent land deals to a restitution fund.

Rachel watched him sign.

“Your father would hate that.”

“Good.”

She almost smiled.

Then Daniel pushed another document toward her.

A petition to dismiss the divorce filing they had left unfinished.

Rachel stared at it.

“This doesn’t fix us.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I don’t want silence making another decision for us.”

May you like

Rachel looked at him for a long time.

Then she picked up the pen.
