Chapter 11 - THE MODEL HOME

The East Ridge model home had been abandoned for years, but I knew every entrance. My father had once used it as a sales office before the recession killed the second phase.
Police surrounded the property. Ortiz fitted a wire beneath my shirt.
“You do not play hero,” she said.
“My mother is inside.”
“That is exactly why.”
I carried a leather folder filled with copies, not the originals Bianca wanted.
Adrian opened the door and searched me.
Mom was tied to a dining chair in the old showroom, bruised but awake.
“Julian, don’t give them anything.”
Bianca stepped from the hallway, exhausted and cold-eyed.
“Still taking orders from your mother.”
“What do you want?”
“The originals.”
“Why?”
She pointed to a framed photo from the East Ridge groundbreaking. Dad stood beside several investors. One was Charles Reed. Bianca’s father.
“Your father built his life by destroying mine.”
“I didn’t know.”
“Of course you didn’t.”
Adrian stepped closer. “The documents.”
I handed over the folder. Bianca opened it.
“Copies.”
Adrian punched me in the stomach. I dropped to one knee.
Mom screamed my name.
That was enough.
The front window burst inward as officers breached from two sides. Adrian grabbed Mom’s chair, but I tackled him before he could drag her into the kitchen. We hit a table. Seconds later, officers pinned him down.
I tore the tape from Mom’s wrists.
Ortiz rushed in.
“Bianca?” I asked.
“Back door. Car waiting.”
Then an officer called from the bedroom.
On the bed sat our wedding invitations beside a printed schedule titled AFTER CEREMONY.
The first line read:
Martha — finalize placement.
May you like
The second:
Julian — begin medical file.
