Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN ON TELEVISION

By morning, Bianca was gone.

By noon, she was everywhere.

Her attorney released a video statement to local news outlets. Bianca sat in front of a plain gray wall wearing no jewelry and almost no makeup.

She looked frightened.

She looked believable.

“I loved Julian,” she said softly. “But his family situation became dangerous. Martha has struggled with confusion for months, and Julian refused to accept how serious it was.”

I nearly threw the remote through the television.

Then she said something worse.

“I tried to protect both of them. Now I’m being blamed because I was the only person willing to tell the truth.”

Clips followed.

Me telling Mom not to drive at night.

Me reminding her about a dinner she supposedly forgot.

Me saying, “Mom, maybe Bianca’s right. Maybe we should get you checked.”

The videos were real.

The context was gone.

My own words had become evidence for her lie.

Mom sat beside me on the couch, silent.

I couldn’t look at her.

“I said those things.”

“I know.”

“I helped her.”

Mom reached over and switched off the television.

“You also came home.”

That simple sentence nearly broke me.

But Bianca’s public story had consequences. Two board members from Vance Development called asking whether I needed temporary leave. A reporter parked outside our gate. Social media filled with strangers debating whether I was exploiting an elderly mother for control of her trust.

Bianca had prepared for this too.

She had not just built a case against Mom.

She had built one against me.

Late that afternoon, Ortiz arrived with a digital forensic technician.

“We recovered a deleted cloud backup from one of the cameras in your house,” she said.

My heart kicked hard.

“What’s on it?”

“Not much. Bianca wiped most of the account.”

The technician opened a laptop.

“But she missed one automatic upload.”

The screen showed the pool patio from a fixed angle.

Timestamp: the day I came home with the roses.

The video began two minutes before I reached the hedge.

Mom walked toward the pool.

Bianca followed.

Then Bianca put both hands on my mother’s back.

And shoved.
