Chapter 19 - MY FATHER’S LETTER

Dad had written the letter eleven years earlier, shortly before he died.

Julian,

If the Reed family ever comes back into our lives, do not punish the children for the father’s choices. But do not ignore what money and resentment can turn people into.

Dad explained that Charles Reed had blamed him for the East Ridge collapse after being removed from the project. He feared Charles’s children would grow up believing the lie.

Then came the line that explained Bianca’s final words.

Bianca had met Dad once. She was nineteen, furious, demanding that he admit he had destroyed her father. Dad refused to shame Charles in front of her. He simply said documents existed if she ever wanted the truth.

She never returned.

Until she met me.

Mom sat across from me.

“You recognized her name when I introduced you?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because your father asked us not to judge the children by Charles.”

Months later, Bianca pleaded guilty to charges tied to the kidnapping, pool assault, forged documents, unlawful surveillance, and the scheme involving Mom’s medical history. Adrian entered his own plea after cooperating. Claire faced separate charges and lost her license.

I stopped needing to watch Bianca lose.

What mattered was helping Mom recover what she had taken from her.

Not money.

Certainty. Trust. Confidence in her own memory.

One afternoon, Mom handed me the spiral notebook.

“I want you to keep this.”

I opened to I AM NOT FORGETTING.

Beneath it, she had added:

I WAS RIGHT TO TRUST MYSELF.

Then she told me she was moving.

May you like

My chest tightened. “Because of what happened here?”

“No, Julian.” She smiled faintly. “Because this time, I want the choice to be mine.”
