Chapter 13 - THE VIDEO SHE FORGOT

No confusion.

No accidental fall.

No argument about whether Mom slipped.

Bianca shoved a seventy-eight-year-old woman into deep water and then stood there while she struggled.

I watched the video once.

Ortiz watched it three times.

Mom refused to watch at all.

“That’s enough,” she said. “I remember being there.”

The footage changed the case immediately. A judge approved broader warrants. Police circulated Bianca’s photo statewide. Her attorney stopped returning reporters’ calls.

For the first time since the pool, I felt something close to relief.

Then Ortiz warned me not to.

“She is cornered now,” she said. “Cornered people become unpredictable.”

That evening, we searched the hidden-camera system more carefully.

The technician found a second user account.

Username: AR_1979.

Adrian.

He had been watching live feeds from my home.

He knew when I slept.

He knew when Mom was alone.

He knew when the housekeeper left.

And he knew exactly when I traveled for work.

The system contained saved clips with labels.

M_SLEEP.

M_CONFUSED.

J_DRINK.

J_MEDICATION.

I opened the last folder.

There were videos of Bianca standing at the kitchen counter with my vitamin bottles and prescription allergy medicine spread in front of her.

In one clip, Adrian’s voice came through her phone.

“Not yet. After the ceremony. We need the paperwork first.”

Bianca answered, “I know.”

Then she held up one of my bottles to the camera.

“How long before he looks tired enough that people notice?”

My skin went cold.

Ortiz immediately contacted prosecutors handling the case.

Before she left, Mom called me into Dad’s old office.

“I remembered something,” she said.

She opened a lower desk drawer and removed a sealed envelope yellowed with age.

Your father’s handwriting covered the front.

CHARLES REED — EAST RIDGE AUDIT. DO NOT DESTROY.

Bianca had said Dad destroyed her family.

Maybe the truth was inside that envelope.

Mom handed it to me.

“Your father told me if the Reeds ever came asking about East Ridge, I was to give this to a lawyer.”

I stared at the seal.

“Did Bianca know this existed?”

May you like

Mom nodded slowly.

“I think that’s what she was looking for in the cabinet.”
