I was nine months pregnant when my mother-in-law pinned me to the couch and forced a mysterious black liquid into my mouth.
“Drink it,” Margaret ordered.
I twisted my head away.
“Get off me!”
She grabbed my jaw harder.
“Stop being dramatic.”
Then the front door opened.
My husband, Ryan, had come home from Chicago a day early.
He froze when he saw his mother holding me down, black liquid spilled across my shirt.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Margaret jumped back.
“This isn’t what it looks like.”
“She forced me to drink something,” I gasped.
Ryan immediately called 911.
That was when Margaret panicked.
“No. Don’t call them.”
Ryan stared at her.
“Why not?”
She had no answer.
Then my contractions suddenly became sharper.
Sirens were getting closer when someone started pounding on our front door.
It was Ryan’s older sister, Jessica.
The second she saw the black liquid on the floor, her face went white.
“Mom gave that to Emily?”
Margaret whispered:
“Jessica, don’t.”
Ryan stepped between them.
“You know what this is?”
Jessica nodded slowly.
Then she looked at me.
“You need to tell the paramedics exactly what she gave you.”
Ryan frowned.
“Why?”
Jessica swallowed hard.
“Because Mom used the same mixture on another pregnant woman twenty-six years ago.”
The room went silent.
Ryan stared at her.
“Who?”
Jessica looked directly at him.
Then she said the words that changed everything:
