Chapter 15 - Margaret's Letter

Margaret's letter was not an apology.

It was a confession written by someone who still believed control could be explained as love.

She admitted helping Charles remove Anna.

She admitted marrying Thomas knowing he was ashamed and easy to manipulate.

She admitted hiding Anna's letters.

Then she wrote about Ryan.

I RAISED YOU. I WAS THERE FOR THE FEVERS, THE SCHOOL PLAYS, THE BROKEN ARM, THE COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE. SHE GAVE BIRTH TO YOU. I MADE YOU MY SON.

Ryan stopped reading.

"No."

Jessica sat beside him.

"Keep going."

The last pages explained Margaret's obsession with the trust.

If Sophie's shares transferred cleanly, old financial records connected to Charles's pension theft would be opened to an independent trustee.

That audit could expose decades of crimes and strip Margaret of the fortune she had built her life around.

So she recreated Anna's crisis.

Confuse the pregnant woman.

Trigger labor.

Produce psychiatric paperwork.

Get temporary control.

Delay the trust.

Destroy the originals.

Simple on paper.

Monstrous in a living room.

Ryan folded the letter.

"She knew exactly what she was doing."

Jessica nodded through tears.

"Yes."

Detective Brooks entered.

"Margaret's lawyer just contacted us. She wants to surrender."

Ryan looked up.

"Why now?"

"Because Harlan is in custody and we recovered the storage unit."

"Where is she?"

Brooks hesitated.

"She says she'll only surrender to you."

"Absolutely not."

"I agree."

Then Brooks added, "But she also says she has one more document. She claims it proves Thomas lied about the night Anna was committed."

Thomas, standing in the hallway, went completely still.

Ryan saw it.

"Dad?"

Thomas did not answer.

And Ryan understood there was still one piece of the story his father had not told.
