Chapter 7 - Twenty-Six Years Ago

Thomas finally told the story he had spent half his life avoiding.
Anna Mercer had been twenty-three when she became pregnant with Ryan.
Thomas loved her, but his family didn't. She came from no money and refused to sign an agreement giving the Carter family control over any future inheritance tied to their company.
Margaret was Thomas's father's private nurse.
Smart. Patient. Useful.
And already obsessed with the Carter name.
"She convinced my father Anna was unstable," Thomas said. "Then she convinced me too."
Ryan's voice broke. "You watched them take her?"
Thomas stared at the floor.
"I signed the first seventy-two-hour hold."
Jessica cursed under her breath.
"Seventy-two hours became twenty-six years," Ryan said.
Thomas flinched.
"Harlan extended it. Margaret arranged evaluations. Every time I tried to reverse it, they produced another report."
Brooks held up the ledger.
"And you paid them."
"At first because they told me it was treatment. Later because Margaret threatened to expose what my father had done with the company pension accounts. I was a coward."
Ryan stepped closer.
"Did you marry her because she blackmailed you?"
Thomas shook his head.
"I married her because I was weak enough to confuse control with rescue."
Jessica's eyes filled.
Margaret was her biological mother.
That truth hurt in a different direction.
Brooks's phone buzzed.
One of her officers had located surveillance footage from Anna's motel.
A gray SUV pulled up twelve minutes before police arrived.
A man wearing medical scrubs entered Anna's room.
He came out with Anna walking unsteadily beside him.
Thomas stared at the still image.
"That's Harlan."
Ryan grabbed his coat.
"Where would he take her?"
Thomas hesitated.
Then he whispered, "There was another facility before Greenwood."
"Where?"
"North Briar."
Brooks searched the name.
The facility had closed fourteen years ago.
May you like
Thomas shook his head.
"Officially."
