Chapter 5 - Anna's Warning

I put the call on speaker.

Ryan froze beside the bed.

"Anna?"

The woman inhaled sharply.

"Ryan?"

He sat down as if his knees had stopped working.

For twenty-six years, he had believed the woman speaking through my phone was dead.

"Are you... my mother?"

Silence.

Then: "Yes."

Ryan covered his mouth.

Anna told us she had spent most of his life inside private facilities under different treatment orders. She had been told Ryan wanted nothing to do with her.

"I wrote letters," she said. "Every birthday. They came back unopened."

Ryan whispered, "I never saw them."

"I know that now."

I asked where she was.

"A motel near Decatur. I left Greenwood after Margaret arrived with papers saying I was being transferred. One nurse warned me the destination didn't exist. I walked out while they argued."

Detective Brooks leaned toward the phone.

"Anna, this is Detective Lena Brooks with Atlanta Police. Are you safe?"

"I don't know."

"Do not tell us your room number over an open call. Stay inside. I can send officers."

Anna's breathing quickened.

"There's something Ryan needs first."

"What?"

"His father kept a red ledger. Thomas recorded every payment he made to Margaret and Dr. Harlan."

Jessica whispered, "Dr. Harlan signed the commitment papers."

Anna continued.

"The ledger proves I wasn't sick when they locked me away. It proves Margaret paid to keep me there."

Ryan stood.

"Where is it?"

"Your father's old study. Behind the family portrait."

Jessica stared at him.

That study was in Thomas Carter's mansion outside Buckhead.

The house where Margaret lived.

Anna lowered her voice.

"Ryan, if the ledger is still there, get it before she does."

Then came a knock on Anna's motel door.

Three slow hits.

She stopped talking.

A man's voice sounded faintly through the phone.

"Mrs. Mercer? We need to speak with you."

The call went dead.
