Chapter 17 - The Last Bargain

The letter wasn't proof against Clara. It had been written years before Clara joined the family. My father had noticed irregular expenses under a former foundation manager and asked for an audit. Vanessa had kept the inquiry quiet, then used the same weak oversight to hide her own transactions. Archived records confirmed the timing. Her accusation was another weapon.

Clara read the findings with her independent attorney. When we spoke afterward, she sounded weary rather than surprised.

"She'd rather burn every bridge than admit she chose to hurt Emma," Clara said.

That evening, Tessa called the foundation's resident hotline. Vanessa had approached her outside the temporary housing center, offering money if she would sign a statement saying the repairs at Haven House were complete. Tessa refused and alerted the caseworker. Security footage from the public lobby documented the encounter. She was furious, but she wasn't frightened into silence.

"People like her count on us being too tired to fight," Tessa told Priya. "I am tired. I'm still going to tell the truth."

Investigators had enough evidence to seek charges. Vanessa was taken into custody after an interview with counsel. Nolan faced separate consequences for the deletion and intimidation. The accounting investigation continued to trace where the funds had gone; the foundation could not simply declare them recovered because someone had been arrested.

I sat alone after Moreno called. I expected relief. Instead I remembered Emma's cry and Clara's face.

Clara asked me to meet her the following afternoon at her attorney's office. I came expecting to discuss the case. A sealed envelope waited on the table.

"Before we talk about Vanessa," she said, "we need to talk about us."
