Chapter 19 - The Ordinary Courage

Olivia wasn't bringing me another conspiracy. A boy at school had been teasing a younger student and telling everyone not to interfere. Olivia had stepped in, and now she was afraid she'd made trouble.

"You didn't," I told her. "Want me to come with you to talk to the counselor?"

She thought for a moment. "You can come. But I want to be the one who speaks."

I sat quietly while she explained what she'd seen. The counselor listened and arranged to check on the younger student. Nobody demanded that Olivia produce a perfect video. Her words mattered. When we left, she slipped her hand into mine for the first time since the stairs.

The foundation published independently reviewed findings about the missing funds and its failures at Haven House. Trustees stepped down. A new board added resident representatives and stronger financial controls. Repair work began under outside oversight, and the displaced families were offered longer-term housing assistance. Not everything was fixed quickly. Tessa reminded me of that whenever I wanted to celebrate a ribbon cutting.

Months passed. Vanessa eventually reached a plea agreement covering several offenses and accepted a substantial prison sentence; restitution orders and civil recovery efforts remained ongoing. Nolan also entered a plea, with his cooperation considered by the court. Neither their punishments nor the press coverage could restore the afternoons Clara spent waking at every noise, or the night Olivia sat with a phone in her hand because she didn't trust the grown-ups.

Clara and I learned a new routine. I took Emma to appointments on scheduled days. I attended counseling, paid attention without trying to manage every conversation, and didn't use gifts as apologies. Some visits felt easy. Others felt unbearably awkward. We kept showing up anyway.

On the anniversary of the incident, Clara invited me for coffee after dropping Emma at daycare. It wasn't a date. We sat across from each other in a noisy bakery.

"There's something I haven't told you," she said, turning her cup between her hands. "I've decided what comes next for me."
