Chapter 18 - The Paper Between Us
The envelope contained a proposed separation agreement, a parenting schedule, and a request that we continue individual counseling before discussing reconciliation. Clara had thought through every line. I had never seen her make a harder decision with a steadier hand.
"I love you," she said. "But I will not teach my daughters that love means staying where someone can hurt you and call it a mistake."
"I don't want you to feel trapped," I answered.
"Then don't argue with the plan because it hurts your pride."
I read it slowly. Emma would stay primarily with Clara for now. Visits would follow an agreed safety plan. Olivia's preferences would be respected within the parenting arrangements that applied to her. We would communicate about the children through a shared parenting app when emotions ran high.
"I want to earn back trust," I said.
"Earn it by becoming safer, not by waiting for a reward."
Later that month, I entered a plea in the case arising from the slap and accepted the court's conditions, including counseling and a period of supervised compliance. I did not ask Clara to defend me or speak on my behalf. When a reporter called, I declined to discuss her private injuries. There was no heroic version of what I'd done.
Vanessa's criminal case was more complicated. The prosecutors alleged child endangerment and related offenses connected to the stroller incident, along with financial crimes supported by the forged records. She contested some allegations through her attorney. The courts would decide the rest. Clara's testimony and Olivia's original video remained central evidence, not entertainment for strangers.
One Saturday Olivia met me on Nina's porch after a supervised visit. "I have a question," she said.
"Anything."
"If I show you something scary again, will you believe me before somebody gets hurt?"
May you like
"I will listen, check, and never punish you for telling the truth," I said.
She nodded. "Good. Because I need to tell you something about school."
