Chapter 1 - The Woman I Blamed

"GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER!"
I heard myself scream before I understood what I was seeing. Lily stood on the wet pool deck, sobbing into a stranger's shoulder. The woman was soaked from her dark hair to her sneakers. Her arms were locked around my six-year-old as if she meant to carry her away.
I had been inside the Briarwood Swim Center for less than ten minutes, signing donor cards for the program my late wife had founded. Now my daughter was coughing beside the deep end.
"Lily!" I ran so fast my shoes slid on the tiles. "What happened?"
"Daddy!" She reached for me. I took her and turned on the woman. "Why were you holding her?"
"Because she fell in," the woman said. "I'm Nora Ellis. I got her out."
"She had no business being on the deck," said Vivian Shaw, the center's director. Vivian appeared beside us wearing a yellow silk scarf and the practiced expression she used at funerals. "I saw that woman grab Lily."
"I pulled her out," Nora snapped. "Ask anyone by the gate."
Vivian pointed at the red marks on Lily's arm. "Then explain those."
I looked down. My little girl was shivering, one shoe missing, her eyelashes stuck together with pool water. Fear twisted into anger before I could stop it.
"Security!" I shouted. "Don't let her leave."
Nora stared at me. "You didn't even see it happen."
"I saw enough."
A young lifeguard hurried over with a towel. "Sir, Lily needs to be checked by medical staff. She was coughing after we got her out."
I wrapped her up and called for an ambulance. While we waited, Lily pressed her cold lips against my ear.

"Daddy," she whispered, "the lady in the yellow scarf told me to go through the gate."
I looked at Vivian. She had already started walking away.
