Chapter 15 - The Meeting They Couldn't Stop

Nora read the announcement standing beside me in the city recreation office. She didn't raise her voice. That somehow made it worse.
"My rescue is being called unsafe contact," she said. "They've turned the thing I did right into the reason I can't work."
A city inspector had agreed to review the gate after Detective Shah forwarded the safety reports. The inspector closed access to the affected pool pending repairs and a full evaluation. Vivian could not reopen it with a board vote.
Still, the emergency board meeting went ahead. Members filled the smaller auditorium, some furious about canceled lessons, others angry that anyone had allowed a dangerous gate to remain open.
Vivian stood at the microphone. "We all love Lily. We also need to remember that a volunteer teacher was dismissed for violating procedure."
"Stop," I said, rising. "Nora was dismissed for reporting hazards. Then she saved my daughter. I accused her because I didn't know what happened. Vivian did."
Vivian pointed at the screen. "And who signed this maintenance delay? Caleb Hart."
"I did," I said. A murmur ran through the room. "I signed without reading the attachment. That's my responsibility, and I have reported it. But that doesn't repair the gate or justify a lie."
Rachel Bennett spoke about the earlier near miss with her son. Hazel's mother read the lifeguard staffing complaint aloud. Nora described the rescue, her wrist shaking as she held the microphone.
"I didn't ask what Lily's father could pay me," she said. "I saw a child under the water. I went in. That's the whole reason I was there."
By the end of the meeting, the board had voted to suspend Vivian pending an independent audit. She walked out without looking at me.

Then the accountant called: "Someone initiated a transfer from Anna's scholarship account an hour ago."
