Chapter 12 - The Apology Everyone Could Hear

I didn't sleep. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Lily slip, then Nora jumping without a second of hesitation. I also saw myself yelling at the only person who had moved toward the water.

The next morning I stood outside Briarwood with my phone mounted on the hood of my car. I recorded another statement, this one without excuses.

"My name is Caleb Hart. Yesterday I accused Nora Ellis of hurting my daughter. That accusation was false. Nora entered the pool to rescue Lily. I never witnessed the fall, and I let my fear turn into a public accusation. I'm sorry. Please stop sharing the edited video."

I didn't mention Vivian's name. The detective had told me to let the evidence speak through the investigation, not an internet argument.

Nora called after the video went up. "My employer wants to know why you're apologizing," she said. "They already canceled my Saturday classes."

"I'll speak to them."

"They watched you shout. They can watch you apologize. But that doesn't make the last twenty-four hours disappear."

"I know."

"I don't think you do yet, Caleb. Yesterday strangers called me a child abuser outside my apartment. My mother cried when she saw the post."

I gripped the phone. "Tell me what I can do."

"Don't try to rescue me with money. Make sure the people who lied can't do it to the next woman."

That afternoon the Briarwood board sent an urgent email: CALEB HART TO BE REMOVED AS SAFETY COMMITTEE CHAIR FOR REPUTATIONAL MISCONDUCT.

I read the message twice. I had earned criticism for the way I treated Nora. But Vivian had signed the email, and it contained no mention of the broken gate.

Attached was a scan of Anna's alleged approval of the unsafe event route. Her name was printed beneath a signature she had never given.

Then Grace noticed the footer: DOCUMENT REVISED TWO WEEKS AFTER ANNA'S DEATH.
