Chapter 11 - THE MAN IN THE REFLECTION

Vega brought Miles in for an interview. He admitted visiting the pool house but claimed he'd been checking an electrical fault. He denied seeing Rosie fall.

“Were you standing three feet from the water?” Vega asked.

“I wasn't watching the child.”

“That's the problem,” she replied.

His attorney ended the interview. Within hours Miles filed a motion to exclude any recording from the private estate. Nora countered with the recorder's installation history, Silas's maintenance logs, and Clara's ownership interest. The legal argument would take time. The emergency hearing would not.

Clara barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the yellow duck drifting away from Rosie's fingers.

At breakfast Rosie pushed away a glass of water. “No pool,” she said.

“No pool,” Clara promised, pulling her close. “We don't have to go near one.”

A new message arrived from an unknown number: YOUR HUSBAND MADE A DEAL. LOOK UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT.

Clara showed Nora. Daniel's wrecked SUV had remained in a secured insurance yard while disputes over the accident were settled. Vega contacted the investigating agency, and Nora requested that any remaining personal effects be preserved.

They were not allowed to search it themselves. But the original accident photographs showed a black plastic case beneath the driver's seat, identified only as a vehicle accessory.

“That isn't a vehicle accessory,” Clara said. “Daniel used that case for his dash camera.”

Vega called the property office. The item had been signed out eight months ago.

“By whom?” she asked.

The clerk read the name on the release form.
