Chapter 7 - WHAT THE RING HELD

A jeweler opened Daniel's ring while Clara watched. A narrow inner compartment slid free, no bigger than a grain of rice. Inside was a tiny rolled strip printed with a sequence of letters and numbers. It wasn't a recording; it was a recovery code.
“Daniel always made backups,” Clara said, remembering how he used to photograph every receipt and save every school drawing in two places.
Nora gave the code to Mae Park, a digital-forensics specialist working with the family's consent. Mae copied the storage phone before opening a password-protected archive. The code unlocked it.
The first folder contained financial transfers totaling almost twelve million dollars, routed from Mercer trust subsidiaries to a company called North Lake Advisory. The payee's signature looked like Everett's. The transaction dates, however, continued for months after his death.
“The signature is a scan,” Mae said. “Somebody reused it.”
The second folder contained grainy security clips. One showed Beatrice entering the pool-house equipment cabinet nearly a year earlier, the night Daniel had first questioned the accounts.
The last folder was marked IF THE ORIGINALS DISAPPEAR. Clara clicked it and heard her husband's voice.
“Clara, if I'm wrong, I'll apologize for scaring you. If I'm right, Beatrice has friends in places I can't reach. Don't confront her alone. Take this to Nora.”
He paused, breathing unsteadily.
“I love you. Rosie needs you. Whatever they say about me, don't believe I left you without a plan.”
The recording ended with another voice, distant but sharp: “Daniel? Who are you talking to?”
Mae replayed it. A car door slammed. Daniel said one last thing before the audio cut.
