Chapter 14 - Nine Thirty on Wednesday

The review took place on Simone's dining table. Ms. Calder joined from school. I sat across from three Lakebridge staff members on a laptop with a sticker peeling off its lid. Nobody wore robes. Nobody looked powerful. That somehow made the decision feel more serious.
Ms. Ward asked me to explain the timeline in my own words. I read from the notes Talia helped me organize. When I reached Mom's message, I had to pause.
"Do you believe your mother intended to harm your education?" one committee member asked.
"I believe she wanted me to stay home," I said. "I don't know every thought she had. I know I never authorized the withdrawal."
Another member asked how I had used the account. I explained the shared computer, the old recovery email, and why I had believed my mother was helping with the financial forms when I was younger.
"Why didn't you protect your password?"
"I should have changed the settings when I turned eighteen," I said. "But needing better security doesn't mean I agreed to give up my award."
Ms. Ward nodded and moved to the documented account records. The identity officer confirmed that the withdrawal had come through the older recovery route. He could not say who was sitting at the keyboard. The message admitting responsibility was therefore important, though the panel would also consider its context.
When they asked if I wanted to add anything, I looked at the folded science project Cleo had left on the shelf.
"I love my sisters," I said. "I cooked their dinners and did their laundry and babysat to help pay our bills. I'm proud I could help. But I also did my homework after everyone slept. I didn't earn this scholarship instead of loving them. I earned it while loving them."
The panel thanked me and ended the meeting.

For a minute Simone and I said nothing. Then my phone lit up with an email from Lakebridge.
