Chapter 16 - A Place They Couldn't Give Away

Dr. Henson called me Thursday at nine fifteen. I was alone in Simone's kitchen, twisting a dish towel until the edges curled.
"The university has determined that the scholarship withdrawal was not authorized by you," she said. "Your original award has been reinstated."
I didn't speak. I had imagined that sentence in my head so many times it no longer sounded real.
"Zarya?"
"I'm here. I'm just trying to believe you."
"You'll receive written confirmation. Your housing place is being restored, and our security office has removed the old recovery credentials. You'll need to confirm the reinstated offer through the new login."
I asked about the student on the waitlist. Dr. Henson said nobody had lost a finalized award because of my appeal. The committee had handled that student separately, without disclosing anyone's private details.
"We take account security seriously," she said. "But I also want to say this plainly. You earned that scholarship. You were entitled to challenge a decision you never made."
After the call I sat on the floor beside the refrigerator and sobbed. Simone found me there and thought something terrible had happened until I managed to show her the email. She lowered herself down beside me, laughing through tears.
I logged in and clicked CONFIRM. This time the screen thanked me by name. I printed the new confirmation at the library and put it in a folder no one else could open.
That evening I texted Mom: The scholarship is restored. I leave in August.
Her answer came an hour later.

I DON'T KNOW HOW WE'RE SUPPOSED TO LIVE WITHOUT YOU HERE.
For the first time, I didn't mistake that sentence for a reason to surrender.
