Chapter 14 - The Box

The file box changed the criminal case.
Not because it contained one dramatic confession.
Because it showed preparation.
Signature samples.
Copies of identification.
Draft deeds.
Bank instructions.
A checklist.
HOUSE TITLE.
TRUST APPROVAL.
BANK GUARANTEE.
SARAH CONSENT.
Beside the last line Diane had written:
IF NO — RYAN HANDLES.
I stared at the photo Rachel sent me.
"What does that mean?"
"We don't guess," she said.
Good.
I was learning too.
Investigators asked Ryan.
He denied ever seeing the box.
Then they found his fingerprints on several pages.
Not proof he created them.
Proof he handled them.
His lawyer stopped giving interviews.
Diane's lawyer began discussing a plea.
I did not attend negotiations.
I had spent enough time inside their decisions.
Instead, I met with a contractor.
Not to remodel the whole house.
Just the kitchen.
I replaced the dented cabinet.
Changed the paint.
Removed the heavy decorative broom rack Diane had bought me.
Kept the camera.
Visible now.
No hiding.
Jenna asked:
"You really want to stay here?"
I looked around.
"It's my mother's house."
That mattered.
Ryan had tried to turn inheritance into leverage.
I refused to let him turn memory into fear too.
Then Allison called.
The independent audit found something new.
Ryan had transferred $120,000 from client deposits into an account labeled MDM RESERVE.
The account owner was not Mercer Development.
It was Ryan personally.
Rachel stared at the statement.
"That money never went to the company."
My stomach dropped.
So even the story about saving employees had been partly false.
Ryan had been protecting himself first.
Then a second transfer appeared.
$40,000 from MDM RESERVE to Diane.
Memo:
May you like
HOUSE HELP.
The broom incident had happened eleven days later.
