Chapter 15 - House Help

HOUSE HELP.
Two words.
Forty thousand dollars.
Diane claimed it was repayment for a family loan.
Ryan claimed it was reimbursement for legal research.
The dates did not support either story.
Prosecutors believed the money was tied to Diane's efforts to secure my signature and the house transfer.
I did not need them to prove every motive for me to understand the pattern.
Pressure had become a service.
Diane was paid.
Ryan benefited.
I was the obstacle.
Then Ryan requested mediation in the divorce.
Rachel recommended accepting.
"Why?"
"Because the criminal case and divorce are separate. Settlement may protect your assets faster."
I hated that law did not move like emotion.
But I agreed.
Ryan sat across from me in a conference room.
He looked older.
No expensive watch.
No confident smile.
"Sarah."
I said nothing.
He apologized.
Not perfectly.
He admitted he let fear about the business turn into entitlement.
He admitted Diane pushed harder than he expected.
Then he said:
"I never wanted her to hit you."
I looked at him.
"But when she did, you watched."
His eyes dropped.
"Yes."
"Then you grabbed me."
"Yes."
"Then you asked me to apologize."
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
There was nothing else I needed.
The settlement gave up any claim to the house.
Any claim to my mother's trust.
Any challenge to the corrected deed.
In exchange, we resolved several marital property issues without trial.
I signed.
Ryan signed.
Then he slid my wedding ring across the table.
He had picked it up from the kitchen floor that night.
I stared at it.
"Keep it," he said.
I shook my head.
"No."
May you like
For once, I did not need the symbol.
I needed the door out.
