Chapter 4 - My Signature

By midnight, the kitchen was a crime scene and my marriage was over.

Not legally.

Not yet.

But I knew.

Maya asked whether Ryan had access to documents with my signature.

I almost laughed.

Tax returns.

Insurance forms.

Closing papers.

Birthday cards.

Seven years of marriage gave him hundreds of examples.

Then I remembered the home office scanner.

Two weeks earlier I found the lid open.

Ryan said Diane had copied medical insurance forms.

I believed him.

Police photographed the scanner and took the refinance application.

The missing copy turned up in Ryan's briefcase.

He insisted it was unsigned.

He was right.

That copy was.

My attorney, Rachel Kim, answered my call at 12:41 a.m.

"Do not sleep in that house tonight."

"It's my house."

"I know. That's why they leave. You don't."

Ryan overheard.

"They?"

Rachel's voice came through the speaker.

"Yes, Ryan. You and your mother."

Diane exploded.

"This woman does not run our family."

Rachel replied calmly.

"Correct. She runs Sarah's legal response."

The police issued temporary separation instructions while the incident was reviewed.

Security escorted Diane outside.

Ryan followed.

At the front door, he turned back.

"Sarah, don't do anything you'll regret."

I looked at the ring on my hand.

Then I pulled it off.

The small sound it made against the tile felt louder than the alarm.

"She can protect herself in court."

Ryan stared at the ring.

I closed the door.

At 2:18 a.m., Rachel arrived with coffee and a laptop.

We checked my credit.

One hard inquiry appeared from Harbor National Bank.

I had never applied there.

Then another document surfaced.

A home-equity application for $480,000.

Applicant one:

Sarah Mercer.

Applicant two:

Ryan Mercer.

And beside my printed name was a signature that looked exactly like mine.

I wrote the date down because I no longer trusted family memory to stay neutral. Dates, messages, bank records, and full recordings gave me something emotion could not: a timeline nobody could rewrite for convenience.
