Chapter 12

The current ledger covered three years.
My inheritance was listed as "Emily Reserve."
Payments went everywhere.
Lisa's mortgage.
Greg's legal fees.
Daniel's business debts.
Margaret's credit cards.
A $27,000 kitchen renovation she had told everyone Robert paid for.
Then Nora found the entry that made her stop.
DEC 27 - REFINANCE CLOSE.
Under it:
PAY E. RESERVE ZERO.
I stared at the words.
"What does that mean?"
Nora pointed to a note in the margin.
CONVERT DEBT TO FAMILY CONTRIBUTION.
Margaret had planned to refinance my house, pay herself through M&R, and reclassify what the family owed me as a gift.
On paper, I would lose the house equity and the debt at the same time.
Daniel sat in Nora's office while she explained it.
He looked sick.
"I didn't know she was doing that."
Nora slid a document toward him.
"This is your signature approving the restructuring."
He looked at it.
"I signed a blank board consent."
I stared at him.
"Why would you sign blank financial documents?"
"Because she was my mother."
"And I was your wife."
That ended him.
He put his face in his hands.
I expected to feel satisfied.
I didn't.
I felt empty.
Later, Robert asked to speak with me alone.
"There's one thing I haven't told the police yet."
I almost laughed.
"Please don't say that sentence anymore."
He nodded.
Then he admitted that eighteen months earlier, he had discovered Margaret moving money.
He confronted her.
She promised to stop.
He did nothing.
"Why?"
"I was ashamed."
"So you protected her."
"Yes."
"And left the rest of us exposed."
"Yes."
He looked older when he said it.
No excuses.
Again.
Then he gave me a flash drive.
"I started copying records after that."
On it were bank statements, emails, and one audio file.
The recording was of Margaret and Daniel arguing.
Daniel's voice said:
"If Emily ever finds out, she'll leave me."
Margaret answered:
May you like
"Then make sure she doesn't find out."
The date was two years earlier.
