Chapter 8

Lisa stopped answering my calls.

Nora found M&R Consulting in less than an hour.

Registered owner: Margaret Brooks.

Secondary contact: Lisa Reynolds.

No employees.

No website.

No commercial address.

Over two years, Brooks Catering had paid the company $312,000 for "strategic consulting."

I stared at the spreadsheet Nora's forensic accountant prepared.

"Lisa knew?"

"We don't know what she knew."

I thought about her apology in the hotel.

About the video.

About the way she had looked when she said my name was in the ledger.

My phone buzzed.

A voicemail from Robert.

"Emily, I need to see you. Alone."

We met at a diner off the highway.

Robert looked ten years older than he had at Christmas dinner.

He slid a key across the table.

"Safe-deposit box."

"What's inside?"

"The documents I should have shown you years ago."

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you?"

He looked out the window.

"Because I spent thirty-eight years calling silence peace."

That sentence stayed with me.

He told me Margaret had controlled every family account. He knew she moved money between the house and business but believed she was covering emergencies.

"Then I found the refinance application," he said. "Your signature looked wrong."

"So you started digging."

"Yes."

"And Daniel?"

Robert's expression hardened.

"He knew more than he's admitting."

He pushed a second item toward me.

A photocopy of a cashier's check.

$184,000.

My money.

The check had not gone to Brooks Catering as Daniel told me.

It had gone to the county tax office and a private lender holding the lien on the house.

Robert tapped the memo line.

PROPERTY RESCUE - EMILY CARTER FUNDS.

"Your money saved the house," he said. "But Daniel let everyone believe he did."

I turned the page.

Attached was an email from five years earlier.

Daniel had written it to Margaret.

Mom, don't tell Emily where the money went. She'll want control.

My hands went cold.

Then I read Margaret's reply.

Don't worry. By the time she understands, she'll be family enough not to fight us.
