Chapter 15

Eleanor's letter was six pages long.

She had noticed the same pattern decades earlier.

Margaret did not steal in one dramatic act.

She created obligations.

She paid someone's bill, covered someone's mistake, kept someone's secret.

Then she used the debt as a leash.

"She confuses being needed with being loved," Eleanor wrote.

The sentence hurt because I had done my own version of that.

I had kept helping Daniel because helping made me feel necessary.

Necessary had felt close enough to loved.

Eleanor wrote that Robert avoided conflict, Lisa appeased, Daniel hid, and Margaret controlled.

Then she mentioned me.

"Emily is the first person in years who says no without trying to humiliate anyone. That will make Margaret afraid of her."

I cried for the first time since Christmas.

Not because Eleanor had predicted the slap.

Because someone had seen me clearly before I learned to see myself.

The last page contained instructions for Robert.

If Emily's money is ever used to save the house, protect her interest in writing. Do not let family loyalty become theft.

That was why Robert had transferred the deed.

He had followed his mother's instruction once.

Then spent years failing to follow the rest.

Lisa sat across from me.

"Mom used to call Grandma dramatic."

"Maybe everyone calls the truth dramatic when it arrives before they're ready."

Lisa gave a weak smile.

Then she told me Margaret had asked her to testify that I threw the soup first.

"What did you say?"

"No."

"And?"

"She said she'd stop helping with my mortgage."

I waited.

Lisa looked at me.

"I told her to stop."

That mattered.

Not because it fixed anything.

Because for the first time, Lisa had chosen a cost.

My phone rang.

Nora.

"Emily, the prosecutor is filing charges tomorrow."

"Against Margaret?"

"Margaret and Greg."

A pause.

"Daniel too?"

"Not yet. But he has a decision to make."

"What decision?"

"Whether he cooperates."

I looked at my wedding ring, still sitting in a small envelope in my purse.

For the first time, I hoped he would do the right thing.

May you like

Not for me.

For himself.
