Chapter 15 - Dad’s Mistake

Dad had approved a legitimate licensing reserve.

George redirected the money later.

Dad was not part of the theft.

But his signature opened the door.

He had trusted his brother.

He had not asked enough questions.

He looked ashamed.

“I failed the board.”

“Yes.”

“I failed your grandmother.”

“Maybe.”

“I failed you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He looked up.

“You failed your responsibility. That does not mean you get to claim every consequence as yours.”

He smiled sadly.

“That sounds like your mother.”

Good.

Regulators cleared him of intentional wrongdoing.

He resigned from the board anyway.

For three years, no Reyes family member would serve as chair.

Independent controls were installed.

External audit committee.

Dual approval for large transfers.

No family override.

The company survived.

George’s power did not.

Then came the criminal cases.

George pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy.

Dr. Ward lost his medical license.

Patricia lost her notary commission.

Serena received probation for cooperation.

Natalie returned every dollar she could trace.

Carmela faced charges for fraud, forgery, attempted financial exploitation, and administering medication without consent.

Anton testified against her.

She looked at him across the courtroom.

“My own son.”

He answered:

“My wife was your victim.”

I felt the words physically.

Not because he called me his wife.

Because he finally chose truth over blood.

Then Carmela whispered:

“I did everything for you.”

Anton shook his head.

May you like

“No. You did everything for control.”

Dad later told the regulators the same thing he told me: “I signed without asking enough questions.” There was no clever explanation. That plain admission carried more weight than any attempt to make himself look innocent.
