Chapter 9 - Six People

Six people had pieces of the plan.

George.

Carmela.

Patricia.

Dr. Ward.

George’s CFO, Martin Hale.

And Carmela’s assistant, Serena.

Not everyone knew about the champagne.

That was the clever part.

Serena only knew she had been told to copy my signature samples.

Patricia only knew she was notarizing “urgent family documents.”

Ward only knew he was creating a fake medical narrative.

Martin moved money.

George coordinated the business side.

Carmela handled me.

One person does not need to know the whole crime if each person is willing to ignore one obvious question.

Serena turned herself in.

She admitted accessing my wedding-planning tablet.

Downloading my saved signatures.

Copying emails.

Then she said:

“Mrs. Mercer said you were dangerous.”

I almost laughed.

“What did she say?”

“That you were after Anton’s money.”

While she was trying to steal my voting rights.

Projection is efficient.

Serena also gave police a calendar.

An event scheduled for 8:00 a.m. the next morning.

FAMILY REVIEW.

Location:

Mercer estate library.

Police surveilled it.

George arrived.

Then Carmela.

Then Martin.

Patricia.

They were trying to align their stories.

An informant recorded George saying:

“No one mentions the glass.”

Carmela replied:

“The glass is not the problem.”

“What is?”

“Anton.”

George asked:

“Will he protect you?”

Carmela said:

“No.”

Then she added:

“That is why Claire has to leave him before Monday.”

I looked at Anton.

They did not just want me unconscious.

They wanted our marriage broken.

Serena’s statement showed how ordinary the scheme looked from the inside. Every request came wrapped in words like urgent, private, family, protective. Nobody was asked to commit a grand crime in one step. They were asked to make one small exception, then another.
