Chapter 19 - One Year Later

One year after the wedding, we went back to the same hotel.

Not for an anniversary celebration.

For closure.

The ballroom was being used for a medical conference.

Different flowers.

Different guests.

Different life.

Anton and I sat in the lounge.

He ordered sparkling water.

I ordered champagne.

The waiter placed both glasses down.

Anton looked at mine.

Then at me.

“Want to switch?”

I laughed.

“No.”

“Sure?”

“Yes.”

He raised his water.

“To terrible jokes.”

“To surviving your mother.”

“That too.”

We drank.

Nothing happened.

That should not have felt important.

It did.

Then the hotel manager approached.

He remembered us.

Of course he did.

Hard wedding to forget.

He handed me a small envelope.

“This was found in storage after your reception.”

Inside was my original wedding place card.

CLARA & ANTON.

On the back, someone had written in pencil:

Don’t let them make you small.

No signature.

I knew the handwriting.

Grandma.

Dad later admitted he had placed one of her old notes inside my bridal folder as a surprise.

It must have fallen out.

I stared at the sentence.

All year, I thought the lesson was about trust.

Maybe it was also about scale.

Carmela’s plan worked because everyone around her made themselves smaller.

Anton.

Patricia.

Serena.

Even George, in a different way.

I had done it too.

Until the glass.

Sometimes survival starts with a tiny act.

Two seconds.

One switched drink.

May you like

One decision not to pretend you did not see what you saw.

Standing in the hotel again, I realized the room had never been cursed. It was only a room. The fear belonged to a memory, and memories can lose power when you return to them by choice instead of being dragged back.
