Chapter 7 - The House Safe

Anton stopped defending his mother.

That mattered.

He gave police access to everything.

Email.

Phone.

Bank accounts.

Family-office records.

Then he told Harris about a wall safe in Carmela’s study.

Police got a warrant.

Inside they found copies of my signature.

Wedding forms.

My trust schedule.

Dr. Ward’s fake report.

And a handwritten timeline.

MONDAY VOTE.

48 HOURS.

CLARA UNAVAILABLE.

ANTON COOPERATIVE IF NECESSARY.

I stared at the last line.

“What does that mean?”

No one answered.

Then Harris opened an envelope marked ANTON.

Inside was another small bottle.

Same sedative.

Higher dose.

Anton went pale.

“No.”

Carmela had planned for him too.

Maybe not tonight.

Maybe later.

If he resisted.

If he asked questions.

If he chose me over her.

Then Anton remembered last Christmas.

He had become dizzy after dinner.

Slept fourteen hours.

Everyone blamed wine.

He had only had two glasses.

Police pulled his medical records.

No toxicology.

But the symptoms matched.

Why would Carmela drug her own son?

The answer was in the safe.

A proxy form.

Signed by Anton that Christmas.

He had unknowingly transferred voting authority in a Mercer family trust to Carmela.

She had done this before.

Drug.

Paperwork.

Control.

Family as camouflage.

Anton sat on the floor.

“My whole life…”

I knelt beside him.

He looked at me.

“Did she ever love me?”

I had no answer.

Then Harris’s phone rang.

George had disappeared.

Anton asked Harris to photograph every item before removing it from the safe. His voice was steady, but his hands were not. I watched him understand that the woman who taught him to sign birthday cards had also practiced using his signature when he could not object.
