Chapter 1 - THE SLAP

My sister slapped my six-month-old daughter at Christmas dinner.

The sound was small.

The silence afterward was not.

Emma's cry ripped through my parents' dining room so sharply that every fork stopped halfway to every mouth. I stared at Lauren's hand, still raised beside my baby's face, and for one stupid second my brain refused to understand what my eyes had just seen.

"What did you do?"

Lauren rolled her eyes. "Oh, please. It was a tap."

Emma screamed harder against my chest. Her tiny body shook inside her red reindeer onesie. I pulled her close, one hand cupping the back of her head.

"You hit my baby."

"She wouldn't stop crying. Somebody had to teach her."

My mother stared at her plate. Dad cleared his throat. Uncle Ron suddenly found the gravy bowl fascinating.

Nobody moved.

Nobody except James.

His chair scraped across the hardwood.

My husband had been home from deployment for twelve days. I had seen him tired, angry, grieving, and afraid. I had never seen his face look the way it did then. Calm. Flat. Controlled.

He stepped beside me and looked at Lauren.

"Get out."

She gave a short laugh. "Excuse me?"

"You struck my child. You're leaving. Now."

"This isn't your house."

James glanced at my father. "Then he can tell me she stays."

Dad's eyes dropped.

Lauren looked around the table, waiting for someone to rescue her. No one did.

Her mouth twisted. "You military guys love giving orders, don't you?"

James didn't blink. "If you're not outside in thirty seconds, I'll call the police and report exactly what you just did."

That finally wiped the smile off her face.

She grabbed her purse, knocked over a wineglass, and stormed toward the hallway.

But before she reached the front door, she turned back and looked straight at me.

"Ask Mom why she's so quiet, Sarah."

Then she smiled.

"Ask her what happened the last time you trusted me with a baby."
