Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING

Melissa had recorded Lauren by accident.

Or at least that was how it started.

At dinner, Melissa had been making a short video of the Christmas decorations for her social media page. The camera kept running when she lowered the phone and walked toward the kitchen.

On the video, the image pointed mostly at the floor.

But the audio was clear.

Lauren's voice came first.

"You changed it without telling me?"

Dad's voice answered from the office. "It's my estate, Lauren. I don't need permission."

"So Sarah has a kid and suddenly she gets more?"

"Emma gets her own protected account. It doesn't come out of your share."

"For now."

"What does that mean?"

Then came Mom's voice, nervous and soft.

"Lauren, please don't start."

The recording ended there.

I stared at Melissa. "When was this?"

"Maybe forty minutes before the slap."

Dad sat heavily in his desk chair.

The timeline was ugly.

Lauren discovered the trust provision. She argued with Dad. Later she saw Emma getting attention at dinner. Emma cried. Lauren hit her.

Was that enough to explain it?

No.

Cruelty doesn't need a financial motive. But motive made the cruelty colder.

James arrived after I called him. He listened to the audio twice.

"Save copies," he said. "Cloud, email, external drive."

Dad looked offended. "This is still a family matter."

James turned toward him. "Your adult daughter struck an infant, threatened my wife, filed a false complaint, and destroyed legal documents. Stop calling this a family matter like that makes it smaller."

Dad's face reddened.

Then softened.

"You're right."

It was the first time I had ever heard him say those words about Lauren.

That evening, my parents called their attorney.

At 7:20 p.m., he called back.

"Robert," he said to Dad over speakerphone, "I need to ask you something very carefully. Did you authorize anyone to contact my office yesterday pretending to be you?"

Dad went still.

"No."

The attorney sighed.

"Then we have a bigger problem."

Someone had tried to move money out of Emma's new account.
