Chapter 14 - THE BOX

The shoebox was a map of resentment.

But mixed among them were lists.

Things Sarah got.

Things I lost.

Dad missed my recital because Sarah was sick.

Mom bought Sarah a new coat when mine was old.

Sarah got the bigger bedroom.

Sarah got college money.

Sarah got the wedding.

Sarah got the husband.

Sarah got the baby.

The last line was recent.

The ink was blue and fresh.

My mother stared at it, trembling.

"I didn't know."

I looked at her. "You knew pieces."

She nodded through tears.

James found an envelope under the notebooks.

Inside were printed pictures of Emma taken from my social media account. Some had notes written beside them.

FIRST GRANDCHILD.

TRUST CHANGE.

CHRISTMAS CENTERPIECE.

One photo had a circle drawn around Emma's face.

James immediately photographed everything and called the investigator.

Mom sat at our kitchen table like she might collapse.

"I made this worse," she whispered.

"How?"

"Every time Lauren got angry, I told her she was still special. Still first. Still my girl. I kept promising nothing would ever change her place."

"And when life changed anyway?"

Mom covered her face.

"She thought someone had stolen it."

Lauren was responsible for Lauren. But my parents had spent years feeding the story that consequences were betrayal and boundaries were cruelty.

The doorbell rang.

James checked the camera.

Two police officers stood outside.

I assumed they had come for the box.

I was wrong.

One officer asked me to sit down.

"We located your sister's vehicle," she said.

"Where?"

"At a motel outside the county."

"Did you arrest her?"

The officer shook her head.

"She wasn't there."

Then she placed a clear evidence bag on the table.

Inside was a printed photograph of Emma.

On the back Lauren had written an address.

My parents' house.
