Chapter 17 - THE WAREHOUSE

Dad wanted to go alone.
Nobody let him.
Police arranged the meeting at the abandoned warehouse where Walker Electric had once stored equipment. Dad wore a recording device. Officers waited nearby. James and I stayed in an unmarked car across the road because the investigator had made one thing very clear: we were not part of the operation.
At 12:11, Lauren arrived.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
Dad met her inside.
Later, we heard the recording.
"You called the police on me," Lauren said.
"You tried to steal from us."
"From her."
"Emma is us. She's family."
Lauren laughed. "There. That's it. Sarah has a baby and suddenly the whole family reorganizes around her again."
Dad's voice shook. "This is not about Sarah anymore. This is about what you did."
"What I did? Want what you promised me?"
Then Lauren produced her supposed evidence.
Years earlier, Dad had hidden company losses before selling Walker Electric. Or so she claimed.
She had old spreadsheets and emails.
Dad looked at them.
"These are drafts," he said. "The losses were disclosed in the final sale documents."
Lauren faltered.
"You're lying."
"No. Trevor told you half a story because he was stealing inventory at the time."
Silence.
Dad stepped closer.
"Lauren, come with me. Turn yourself in. Stop making this worse."
For a few seconds, I thought she might.
Then a metal door slammed somewhere inside the building.
Lauren panicked.
"You brought them!"
She ran.
Officers moved in.
Dad shouted her name.
Lauren sprinted up a metal staircase toward the loading platform. Snow blew through broken windows. She reached the upper walkway, looked down, and froze.
There was nowhere left to go.
An officer raised his voice. "Lauren, stay where you are."
She backed toward the railing.
Dad went pale.
"Honey, don't."
Lauren stared at him.
May you like
And for the first time, the anger disappeared from her face.
"You should've loved me before she came," she whispered.
