Chapter 11 - Forty-Seven Minutes

Forty-seven minutes became the number I could not stop thinking about.
What changes in forty-seven minutes?
A headache becomes confusion.
Confusion becomes collapse.
A decision becomes irreversible.
The medical review could not say with certainty that an earlier ambulance would have saved Claire.
I wanted certainty because anger loves clean answers.
Medicine did not give me one.
The review did say prompt emergency evaluation was indicated once Claire's symptoms worsened.
Vanessa knew enough to know Claire needed help.
Thomas knew enough to call me and did not.
Three adults chose secrecy.
Ortiz interviewed Vanessa again.
This time Vanessa admitted she was at the apartment.
She admitted arguing with Claire.
She admitted reaching for Claire's laptop.
Vanessa insisted she never meant to hurt her.
The real crime began after the fall.
Marcus moved Claire to Briar Lake.
Then Claire deteriorated.
I asked Ortiz, "Why did Vanessa keep the certificate?"
"Leverage."
Against anyone who later tried to cut her out.
That explained why it ended up in my desk.
Vanessa had been searching for it when I came home.
Someone moved it from her safe to my office.
Noah answered that accidentally.
"Aunt Claire's friend came here last week."
"What friend?"
"The lady with red glasses."
"She said she worked with Aunt Claire."
Mrs. Alvarez remembered too.
A woman named Elena Brooks had visited claiming to deliver archived company papers.
Elena Brooks had been Claire's deputy compliance officer.
She resigned ten months earlier.
Rachel found a current address.
Before I could call, an email arrived from Elena.
