Chapter 13 - The USB Drive

The USB contained no secret video of murder.

It contained something more useful.

Records.

Claire being Claire.

Spreadsheets.

Vendor comparisons.

Screenshots of recovery codes.

Copies of messages between Vanessa and Marcus.

A memo titled IF I AM REMOVED.

Claire had mapped the scheme almost completely.

Northstar submitted false consulting invoices.

Carter Holdings paid them.

Some money covered the hidden investment losses.

Some returned through consulting companies.

Vanessa received at least $640,000 over two years.

Thomas did not appear to take money personally.

His benefit was concealment.

That distinction mattered.

Then we found a folder named D.C.

Inside was an audio file.

Claire spoke directly to me.

"Daniel, if you're hearing this, either I lost my nerve or something went wrong."

"I need you to know I am not trying to destroy Dad's company. I'm trying to stop people from using his name as a shield."

"Vanessa is part of it. Marcus is deeper. Thomas knows enough to be dangerous because he keeps choosing reputation over truth. Graham keeps the digital doors open."

"And you keep choosing peace over conflict. That's your part."

That hurt because it was true.

"You think being fair means waiting until everyone agrees. Sometimes waiting is a decision."

"If I disappear, do not let them turn me into a villain. And do not make Noah and Lily pay for what the adults around them chose."

I did not speak for a long time.

Then Peter opened the final spreadsheet.

One column tracked every post-death action performed under Claire's credentials.

At the bottom, a projected future transaction appeared.

CARTER FAMILY TRUST — SUCCESSION VOTE.

Scheduled date:

Rachel stared.

"What vote?"

I knew.

The board planned to merge Carter Holdings with Northstar's parent company.

Claire's shares would be voted in favor.

A dead woman was about to approve the merger that would erase the paper trail.
