Chapter 8 - Briar Lake

Briar Lake sat eighty miles north of the city.
My father bought the cabin before Noah was born.
After his health failed, nobody used it.
That was the story.
Property records showed utilities had remained active.
Security logs showed Vanessa's car entering the private road the night Claire disappeared.
Marcus arrived forty minutes later.
Thomas arrived the next morning.
I felt like the last person in my own family to receive every important fact.
Ortiz obtained a warrant.
We did not go inside with police.
I waited at a diner ten miles away with Rachel.
"We found evidence someone stayed there during that period."
"Claire?"
"Likely."
"What happened?"
"We need lab results."
"Lena."
"There were medical supplies. Bandages. Prescription pain medication. Records in Marcus Hale's name."
Claire had been injured in the apartment.
Instead of taking her to a hospital, they had taken her to a private cabin.
Because hospitals create records.
Records create questions.
Marcus had treated her himself.
Thomas later admitted the same thing.
He told Ortiz that Claire fell during an argument at her apartment.
Vanessa insisted it was an accident.
Marcus said she needed observation first.
Vanessa argued that if Claire went to an emergency room, police would see the bruising from the confrontation and the company fraud would explode.
Not locked in a basement.
They used persuasion, pressure, medication, and the fact that she was disoriented.
Thomas arrived the next morning and should have ended it.
Claire's condition worsened.
Only then did Marcus call an ambulance.
She died before reaching the hospital.
He signed the certificate.
Thomas arranged a private cremation under Claire's full legal name but kept the record away from company counsel and from me.
I whispered, "Where are her ashes?"
Ortiz was silent.
Then she said:
"Daniel, we found an urn in the cabin safe."
May you like
For thirteen months, my sister had been ten miles from a family property caretaker who had no idea she was dead.
And her family had left her there like another document to hide.
