Chapter 10 - The Price of Silence

Detective Moreno obtained a copy of the message through the lawful investigation and interviewed Ruth again. The bank records, meanwhile, showed that Mallory had used her temporary access to pay personal credit-card balances and a late rent account from Helen's checking account. The total was significant to Helen, though not the fortune family gossip would soon invent.

Mallory had lost her sales job the previous winter. She had told friends she was consulting from home, but she was behind on bills and furious that Helen wouldn't take out another loan to help her. Daniel learned the details from the bank records and someone who had once helped Mallory pay her rent.

"She was desperate," Ben said over lunch.

"So she robbed Mom and tried to hurt Claire?"

"I didn't say that. I'm saying desperation makes people tell themselves stories. It doesn't make the stories true."

At the hospital, Dr. Shah explained that Claire would likely move from intensive care to a neurological step-down unit if her progress held. She still tired quickly, had trouble tracking movement and sometimes became agitated when asked too many questions.

Daniel sat beside her, talking about ordinary things: Emma's new rain boots, a leaking faucet, the neighbor's dog that barked at the mail truck. Claire looked toward him and mouthed something.

"What did you say?"

Her lips moved again. The nurse leaned closer.

"Don't strain," she said gently. "We can try later."

But Claire caught Daniel's sleeve with weak fingers. She whispered one rough word he could finally understand.

"Emma."

He bent until their foreheads almost touched. "She's safe. She's safe because of you."

Claire tried to speak again, her eyes wide with sudden fear.

May you like

"Mallory," she breathed. Then she shook her head, struggling for air.

Daniel pressed the call button as the monitor alarm began to sound.
