My Sister Saw Mom’s Silver Cross on My Wife at the Funeral—Then She Threw a Flowerpot, and Our 4-Year-Old Screamed, “Daddy, Mommy Won’t Wake Up!”

"Daddy, why aren't you getting in?" Emma asked.

Daniel stood beside the ambulance doors, unable to answer. One medic was securing Claire's neck; another was attaching monitors. Her face looked smaller against the white stretcher sheets. Emma reached toward her, but a paramedic gently stepped between them.

"We have to take care of your mommy," the woman said. "Your daddy will follow."

A police officer approached Daniel. "Sir, I need you to step away from the vehicle."

"My wife is inside."

"I understand. We're arranging a ride. But several people say you assaulted the other woman."

Daniel looked at his stained hands. "She's my sister. She threw a planter at Claire. My daughter was in her arms."

"And what happened after that?"

"I hit her." He swallowed. "I hit her with another one."

The officer's expression didn't change. "Then I need you to stay with me."

An older woman pushed through the crowd. Ruth Kline had sung beside Helen in the church choir for twenty years. She promised to call their friend Ben. She slipped her arms around Emma, who was crying so hard she could barely breathe.

Daniel knelt before Emma. "Uncle Ben will stay with you until I can get there."

"Don't go away like Grandma."

He pulled her close, careful of the clay dust on his coat. "I am coming back. I promise."

Across the courtyard, a second ambulance crew loaded Mallory onto another stretcher. Her right arm was strapped against her chest. She stared directly at Daniel as they passed. He thought she might ask about Claire. Instead she said, "You picked her. Again."

At the hospital, Ben arrived to take responsibility for Emma. Daniel was allowed to meet them in the emergency waiting area after an initial statement, but the officer remained close. A trauma surgeon appeared behind the glass doors.

"Mr. Bennett? Your wife has bleeding around her brain. We need to operate."
