Chapter 12 - The Charge Against Daniel

Daniel read the charging document sitting in his car outside the hospital. The words were plain. He had struck Mallory with a heavy ceramic planter after she was no longer attacking Claire. The injury to his sister was serious enough that he could not pretend it was only a shove.

"I'll plead guilty if that's what it takes," he said.

Attorney Monroe shook her head. "Not because you want to punish yourself. Understand the charge, understand the evidence and make an informed decision. You still have the right to a defense."

In court a week later, the judge set conditions for Daniel while his case proceeded. He was not to contact Mallory, and he had to attend an assessment for anger management. He was allowed to keep caring for Emma and visiting Claire.

Outside the courtroom, a reporter pushed a phone toward him. "Do you regret attacking your sister?"

Monroe reached to stop him, but he spoke.

"Yes," Daniel said. "I regret hurting her. I also regret that my wife is in a hospital because somebody attacked her. Those are two separate facts."

Detective Moreno met him at the hospital with new information. A bank employee had confirmed that Helen came in with Claire, understood the decision and personally revoked Mallory's authority to access the account. The employee remembered Helen saying, "I love my daughter, but I'm not giving her my savings again."

"Mallory knows the records exist," Moreno said. "She's been denying she was ever told."

Daniel turned the blue envelope over in his hands. "And there's still a missing page."

"We're looking into that."

That evening Emma asked whether Daddy had been in trouble at school. Daniel sat on the floor and told her adults could be required to answer for hurting other people too.

"Even if you were trying to help Mommy?" she asked.

He swallowed. "Even then. What matters is what I actually did."

The next day, Claire surprised the nurses by writing a whole sentence on her communication pad: I WANT TO SEE EMMA.
