Chapter 14 - Vanessa's Second Lie

A mechanic cut power to the pump at the bridge. Somebody had wired it to a remote starter. The machine fell quiet, but water was already spreading across Hawthorne Row's lowest street.
"Get the families out," Nadia ordered. "Now."
Police cruisers rolled slowly past the houses, broadcasting evacuation instructions. Rosa Perez called neighbors who didn't answer the door. A teenager named Luis rode his bicycle up and down the block until a deputy told him to climb into a van.
At 11:09, Vanessa called Theo's phone. Her makeup had smeared, and she was sitting in the cab of a parked car.
"Pike isn't coming to the station," she said. "He knows it's a trap."
"Where is he?" Ortiz asked.
"I don't know. He took the signed contracts. He took my passport."
Claire kept her voice steady. "Then tell us the truth. All of it."
Vanessa's shoulders shook. She admitted she had promised Claire's property without permission. She had forged the first signature, taken the advance, and concealed Harborstone's engineer's warning about the drainage gate. When Pike demanded a real signature, she chose the window.
"I thought you'd do anything to get Emma back," Vanessa said. "I thought she'd fall on the canopy and be okay."
Claire felt sick. "You thought she was a bargaining chip."
"He said we would be rich."
"You were already my sister. You had a home you could visit. You had a niece who would have loved you."
Vanessa covered her face.
Ortiz asked for the location. This time Vanessa gave it: the old thread mill near the east bypass. She said Pike was there with the original inspection report, looking for a way to make it disappear.
"Send officers," Ortiz said to her team.

Vanessa lifted her head. "Claire, there's something else. Your mother didn't keep the gate locked to hide a secret. She kept it locked because she thought someone was waiting to destroy the proof."
Then a bright headlight filled Vanessa's windshield, and the call went black.
