Chapter 20 - A Window Left Open

On Emma's first birthday, the house smelled of cake and fresh paint. Sunlight crossed the living-room floor. A new awning stretched above the porch, stronger than the old one, but Claire had asked the builders to leave a small piece of Ruth's green canvas framed beside the back door.

Mr. Ellis stood beneath it holding a gift wrapped in newspaper. Rosa carried a casserole nobody had requested and everyone knew they would eat. People from Hawthorne Row crowded into the yard with balloons, folding chairs, and children who had once been strangers to Claire.

The protected maintenance entrance was still beneath the house. Now the county inspected it, and every family living downhill could see the reports. Claire had granted a permanent public safety easement while keeping her home. Nobody could buy silence through that basement again.

"Big speech?" Mr. Ellis asked as Claire lifted Emma from her high chair.

"Absolutely not."

"Then why are you holding a napkin like notes?"

Claire looked down. On it she'd written three words: YOU ARE SAFE.

She wasn't sure when she would believe them without effort. Some mornings she still checked the windows twice. Some afternoons she sat in the nursery listening to Emma breathe, grateful and angry in the same moment.

But today Emma was covered in frosting and reaching for Mr. Ellis's glasses. She let out a laugh so loud that Rosa laughed with her.

Claire carried her to the living-room window. It was closed and latched. Outside, the street curved toward the creek, where families were hanging paper lanterns from their porches.

A year earlier, Vanessa had wanted the house badly enough to throw Emma away. Claire had almost lost everything while trying to keep it.

Now she understood that the house was never the prize. It was the place where they could keep choosing one another, with nothing to sign and nobody left outside.

Emma pressed one sticky hand against the glass, then turned and rested her head on Claire's shoulder.

"Happy birthday, baby," Claire whispered. "You made it home."
