Chapter 1 - THE BOY BEHIND THE HORSE

The first thing Nora Reyes saw through the rain was the rope.

Not the horse. Not the woman in the yellow slicker. The rope.

It stretched from the saddle horn to the wrists of an eight-year-old boy stumbling through brown roadside mud.

"Oh my God," Nora whispered.

The woman did not stop.

"Keep moving, Ethan!" she shouted. "You wanted to act like an animal, you can learn how hard animals work."

Nora stood frozen beneath the awning of the closed gas station across the road. Then training took over. Twenty-seven years as an emergency-room nurse had taught her one thing: when something looks wrong, document first and move fast.

She lifted her phone and hit record.

The woman - Claire Mercer, though Nora did not know her name yet - tugged the reins. The horse took three slow steps. Ethan lurched after it.

"Please," he sobbed. "I can't breathe."

"You're breathing fine," Claire snapped.

Ethan shook his head. "My inhaler."

Nora zoomed in.

Instead, Claire pulled out a blue rescue inhaler.

She held it up where Ethan could see it.

"You mean this?"

"Please, Claire."

Claire smiled.

Then she tossed the inhaler into a drainage ditch filling fast with muddy water.

Nora's stomach dropped.

"No sightseeing if you don't keep up," she said loudly, almost cheerfully, as if performing for an audience that did not exist.

But there was an audience.

Nora was still recording.

And when she zoomed in one last time, she saw Claire bend down and tighten the knot around Ethan's wrists before leading the horse toward the flooded tree line.

That was when Nora called 911.

But before the dispatcher could finish asking for the location, a black pickup rolled slowly past Nora's side of the road.

The driver looked straight at her phone.

May you like

Then he stopped.
