Chapter 18 - THE BLUE BOX

The old Honda sat under a tarp behind a farmhouse sixty miles away.
The owner, a retired mail carrier, had bought it cheap because of body damage.
"Never fixed the dent," he said. "Didn't bother me."
Forensic technicians found traces of blue automotive paint deep inside the damaged panel.
Lily's car had been blue.
The evidence did not prove Claire struck her vehicle, but it destroyed Claire's claim that she had never been near Lily's car.
Then came the blue box.
Owen finally admitted he had it.
Claire gave it to him years earlier and told him never to open it. He stored it in a locked equipment shed behind his failed equine business.
Inside were Lily's original charity records, copies of Claire's bank transfers, and a handwritten letter addressed to Daniel.
Daniel opened it with shaking hands.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, then I probably waited too long to tell you something because I wanted to solve it myself. Claire Pike stole from the charity. Rebecca helped bury it. I am taking the evidence to the district attorney next week. If anything strange happens, do not let anyone call me paranoid.
There was more.
A line that made Daniel sit down.
Claire has been watching our family. I saw her outside Ethan's school yesterday.
Daniel pressed the page to the table.
She had not stumbled into his life after Lily died.
Claire had planned her way into it.
Months after the funeral, she joined a grief support group Daniel attended. She introduced herself as Claire Bennett, using her mother's maiden name.
She listened to him talk about Lily.
She learned his routines.
She learned Ethan's fears.
Then she became indispensable.
Harris closed the evidence box.
"This changes the homicide investigation."
Daniel looked through the interview-room glass where Ethan sat building a model airplane with Rachel.
"Good."
But the prosecutor warned them not to expect a simple ending.
"The fraud and kidnapping case is strong," she said. "Lily's death is older, messier, and the defense will fight every inch."
Daniel nodded.
"Then fight."
The prosecutor hesitated.
"There is one more thing in the box."
She handed Daniel a sealed envelope.
