Chapter 15 - LILY'S VOICE

Daniel forgot how to breathe.
"Rebecca knows," Lily said. "She knows Claire stole from the charity, and she knows the board buried it. I gave Rebecca one week to turn over the full file. If she doesn't, I'm going to the district attorney myself."
The recording clicked off.
Every person in the sawmill looked at Rebecca.
She sat on the floor in handcuffs, rainwater dripping from her hair.
"I didn't kill Lily," she said.
Daniel stepped toward her.
Grant blocked him.
"Then explain why Claire had that recording," Harris said.
Rebecca's face crumpled.
"Because I gave it to her."
Daniel stared.
Rebecca swallowed. "Lily recorded a meeting with me. She was furious. She threatened to expose the charity and me. I panicked. I sent the recording to Claire because I wanted her to return the money before Lily went public."
"And four days later Lily died."
"I know."
"Did you tell Claire where Lily would be that day?"
Rebecca looked away.
That was enough.
Harris crouched. "Did you?"
"Lily told me she had a meeting downtown. I told Claire because Claire said she wanted to apologize."
Daniel's voice shook. "What happened next?"
"I don't know. I swear."
The old crash investigation was reopened that night.
The delivery driver, now living in Ohio, agreed to a new interview.
His original statement contained a detail nobody had pursued: seconds before the crash, a silver sedan had cut into Lily's lane, forcing her into the intersection.
He had never seen the driver.
The sedan was never identified.
Harris pulled vehicle registrations from eight years ago.
Claire Pike had owned a silver Honda Accord.
Daniel sat beside Ethan in the hospital observation room while Grant brought him the news.
"We still need physical evidence," she warned.
Daniel looked at his sleeping son.
"Find it."
Grant's phone buzzed.
She read the message twice.
"We may already have."
"What?"
"Owen wants to make a deal."
Daniel stood.
Grant finished the sentence.
May you like
"He says Claire confessed to him the night Lily died."
